Bring on screen Red Rock Entertainment review: the Laureate

How does a film director get right to the heart of the characters? Today Red Rock Entertainment reviews the interview by Connor Mantle. The journalist talked with the director William Nunez about his latest film, The Laureate.

The Laureate is a historical lyric drama set in the 1920s and based on the life of the young British war poet Robert Graves.

As a child, William Nunez wrote short stories and poetry himself. Later on, this passion transformed into working in news production. Apart from that, William has always been enthusiastic about history.

With the idea to film a story about his favorite writer and poet, the film director wondered what fuelled Grave’s creativity, what stood behind the poet’s life choices.

To make it as realistic and genuine as possible, William Nunez reached out to Robert Graves’ son and daughter. They agreed to give access to their father’s diary. Insights from the poets’ notes helped to dive even deeper into the character. The journal revealed internal conflicts and inspirations that Robert went through.

William did his best to get all the minor details right to make it accessible to people as much as possible, for them to feel the atmosphere of the 1920s and, most of all, the conflict which drove Rober Graves’ creativity.

His background in making documentaries helped William Nunez to meet a 22-day shooting schedule with a budget of only about two million pounds.
